G’day all, today I am announcing the launch of the Zalgariath Gaming YouTube channel, where we will take some deep dives into shallow pools of D&D lore and drag out whatever we find at the bottom. The videos will be short as a halfling, eloquent as a bard, and as trustworthy as that NPC quest giver who is wearing a black robe and a glowing ring with weird arcane symbols on it that your party's wizard can’t quite make out. I'd love for you to head over, check it out, and subscribe.
To keep things clear I’ll be breaking down each type of video into a lore category and the two areas I want to start with while the comparison is still relevant are Spells and Monsters and how they have changed from the 5e 2014 rules to the new 2024 rule set, that they really should have just called 5.5 and got it over with.
On top of that, I am a professional DM, so while my main goal here is to help out newer players in our hobby wrap their heads around some basic D&D concepts and lore, why not have some fun while we are at it and actually play some D&D with all of you. In the pinned comment of each video release will be a micro-encounter where you can join our intrepid ZG adventurer, Blowinbogan, the half-drunken full-elven sort-of Ranger, as he embarks on a quest to ensure his rum skin is never empty.

I’ll kick things off with a few instalments of what I like to call “Spell Focus”. In each episode, we will cast an arcane eye over a D&D 5e spell and see how it has changed from the 2014 to the 2024 ruleset, which classes get access to it, and how you can use it at your table.
After that, as “Monster Manual” is already taken and I don’t want lawyer Wizard’s knocking on my screen this early in the piece, let’s call it “Creature Feature” where we do a similar thing comparing classic 2014 to 2025(?) D&D monsters and see who’s been buffed, who’s been nerfed, and try to pick out features and tactics that make encounters with them fun and memorable.
I may add other segments as #dadlife allows, but as every D&D player over the age of 30 knows, getting the time to bring the party together for some much-needed escapism requires a DC25 Scheduling check these days.
So! Before we dive into the first proper ZG adventure, make sure you head over to D&D Beyond to roll up a new Level 1 character sheet and grab a D20… you’ll need it before the end of each video….I’ll wait.
Got it? Good! In the next post, we'll begin with perhaps the most cast spell ever… Cure Wounds.
